Beer Types

Ales vs. Lagers

There are many types of beer

Beer is like people: There are many varieties and personalities

You may be under the impression that there are too many types of beer to keep track of: Stouts, Porters, Hefeweizen and Pilsners, to name a few. We categorize beer by various factors such as color, flavor, strength, ingredients, production method, recipe, history and origin. Not much of this matters, though. In truth, there are only two primary types of beer: Ales and Lagers. The others mentioned above are merely sub-categories. The primary distinctions between Ales and Lagers are the temperature at which the beer is fermented and the type of yeast that is used in the fermentation process.
